Green Octopus

The dragonfly was our first design.  8 generations later it now has siblings, the Octopus.  All  share:

  • 16 led’s, blinking in pairs
  • 12 tiny solar cells
  • 30 min solar charge time
  • 2 minute optional USB charge time
  • Run for 5 hours in darkness

Operation:  I’m alive, I’m ALIVE!

  1. Flip the switch to the side labeled “Direct”. The power storage capacitors are now disconnected and I get my energy directly off the surrounding light. Sunlight is best, but not the only source I like.
  2. Flip the switch to the side labeled “Store”.  This connects the storage capacitors.
    1. Solar – find a light source I like and leave me under it for 30 minutes.
    2. Optional USB – plug me in. If the green light next to the USB is lit, I’m charging.  Wait 2 minutes till my other LED’s are really bright. I’m full.
  3. Store my energy for later by flipping the switch to “Direct”.

Endurance: In “Store” I’ll run about 6 hours on a full charge in complete darkness. In “Direct” I’ll blink as long as the room is bright.

Our second design was the Skull.  We wanted to see how small we could make a piece and keep all the functionality.

5 generations later it has many siblings in both jewelry and kit form; the Kit Skull, Jewelry and Kit Owls,  and jewelry and Kit Foxes.  All of them share these characteristics:

  • 2 alternating LED eyes
  • 4 solar cells – 6 solar cells
  • 15 minute solar charge time
  • 90 second optional USB charge time
  • 90+ minute lifespan in darkness

Operation:  I’m ALIVE!

  1. Flip switch to side labeled “Direct”. The power storage capacitors are now disconnected and I get my energy directly off the surrounding light. Sunlight is best, but not the only source I like.
  2. Flip switch to side labeled “Store” to store solar energy or run off internal storage.  The storage capacitor is now connected.
    1. Solar – find a light source I like and leave me under it for 10-15 minutes.
    2. Optional USB – plug me in. Wait 2 minutes till I’m really, really  If the LED’s are constant, I’m full.
  3. Store my energy for later by flipping the switch to “Direct”.

Endurance: When flipped to “Store” I’ll run about 90 minutes on a full charge in darkness. In “Direct” I’ll blink as long as the room is bright.

Chevron

Chevron

Chevron

Our newest design is the Chevron.  Its an expansion of the skull circuit from 2 to 4 leds with a larger central solar cell. Each chevron has:

  • 4 red alternating LEDs
  • One large central solar cell
  • 15 minute solar charge time
  • 90 second optional USB charge time
  • 3+ hour lifespan in darkness

Operation:  I’m ALIVE!

  1. Flip switch to side labeled “Direct”. The power storage capacitors are now disconnected and I get my energy directly off the surrounding light. Sunlight is best, but not the only source I like.
  2. Flip switch to side labeled “Store” to store solar energy or run off internal storage.  The capacitor is now connected to the circuit.
    1. Solar – find a light source I like and leave me under it for 10-15 minutes.
    2. Optional USB – plug me in. The red charging LED next to the USB will light to show I am charging. Wait 2 minutes till I’m really, really bright.  If the LED’s are constant, I’m full.
  3. Store my energy for later by flipping the switch to “Direct”.

Endurance: When flipped to “Store” I’ll run about 3+ hours on a full charge in darkness. In “Direct” I’ll blink as long as the room is bright.

Heart and Sea Turtle

Red Heart

Red Heart

Sea Turtle

The heart doesn’t just blink, it actually pulses by ramping up and down in intensity.  It has one larger solar panel like the Chevron.

The sea turtle has 4 randomly blinking LEDs like the Chevron, but charges has 5 solar panels like the skull.  It operates like the Heart so we have included it here.

Operation:  I’m alive, I’m ALIVE!

  1. Flip the switch to the side labeled “Direct”. The power storage capacitors are disconnected and I get my energy directly off the surrounding light. Sunlight is best, but not the only source I like.
  2. Flip the switch to the side labeled “Store” to store solar energy or run off of internal storage.  The storage capacitor is now connected.
    1. Solar – find a light source I like and leave me under it for 45 minutes.
    2. Optional USB – plug me in. Wait 4 minutes until the blue/white light comes on.  I’m full!
  3. Store my energy for later by flipping the switch to the side labeled “Direct”.

Endurance: In “Store” I’ll run about 5+ hours on a full charge. In “Direct” I’ll blink as long as the room is bright.

Purple Square

Next we turned the skull into a cute square.  Same number of LED’s and solar cells, same components, just re-arranged. AND it has a longer lifespan!

  • 2 alternating LEDs
  • 4 solar cells
  • 20 minute solar charge time
  • 2 minute optional USB charge time
  • 6+ hour lifespan in darkness

Operation:  I’m ALIVE!

  1. Flip switch to side labeled “Direct”. The power storage capacitor is now disconnected and I get my energy directly off the surrounding light. Sunlight is best, but not the only source I like.
  2. Flip switch to side labeled “Store” to store solar energy or run off internal storage.  The capacitor is now connected to the circuit.
    1. Solar – find a light source I like and leave me under it for 20-30 minutes.
    2. Optional USB – plug me in. Wait 2 minutes till I’m really, really  If the LED’s are constant, I’m full.
  3. Store my energy for later by flipping the switch to “Direct”.
